| AMD and the role of eye vitamins |
Many AMD patients are advised to take a nutritional supplement for their condition. Research indicates that a substance called lutein can prevent or delay the progression of AMD. This is particularly important in the prevention of AMD in a patient’s second eye if one eye is already affected.
A healthy diet high in antioxidant vitamins and minerals has long been associated with the prevention or delay of AMD. Good sources of lutein are green leafy vegetables, especially spinach. However, for people who don’t get adequate nutrition through their diet, a nutritional supplement containing lutein may help.
Vitamin supplements containing antioxidants, zinc and copper are also shown to reduce the likelihood of the progression of intermediate and advanced AMD by tackling the elements which damage the retina over time. When antioxidants are combined with pure lutein, this can further protect the retina, and subsequently delay or prevent the progression of AMD.
