A Healthy Smile for Life
The 4 steps
Take the 4 Steps to a healthy smile
Once you’ve got into the habit of brushing, flossing and rinsing every day, you won’t even realise you’re doing it. Of course, we recommend you also visit the dentist regularly. But by adding just a few minutes to your daily dental routine, you can be sure you’ll have something to really smile about every time you visit.

Did you know? Research has shown that adults who flossed had twice as many plaque free surfaces between their teeth*.

Step 4 - Visit the dentist regularly
Many people don't like going to the dentist because they only go when they have a problem. But if you have regular check ups (at least twice a year), you'll give your dentist the chance to check your teeth and gums for signs of disease and decay – making nightmare visits a thing of the past.
Finding a Dentist
Recommendations from people you know and trust are usually the best place to start. Failing that, you can always call the ADA, or visit their website, for a list of recommended dentists in your area. |
What usually happens during a dental visit?
- A thorough cleaning. Using special instruments, a dental hygienist may scrape below the gum line, removing built-up plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other problems. Your dentist or hygienist may also polish and floss your teeth.
- A full examination. Your dentist may perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and mouth, looking for signs of disease or other problems.
- X-rays. Your dentist may recommend X-rays to help diagnose problems such as damage to jawbones, impacted teeth, and decay between the teeth.
